Inclusive Finance Initiative

“The rapid progress of information technology, particularly in finance, means that less developed nations have an opportunity to leapfrog over those nations burdened by entrenched legacy systems ….”

Professor David Hand,
Imperial College London

Dr Kupukile Mlambo Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe

Launched in 2007

This initiative seeks to understand how to better mobilise finance for SMEs and micro-entrepreneurs and link them more effectively into formal banking systems.

It has a particular focus on the rapidly emerging data and digital technology landscape; together with the opportunities and threats these pose.

Its activities regularly link into parallel CPTM activities such as country National Visions, as well as the Innovation and Technology initiative.

Dialogues centre around gatherings of Commonwealth Central Bank governors, with CPTM bringing in world class experts from technology companies, academia, banking and finance.

They are held in London and member states. Specific topics have included fintech, crypto-assets, the regulation of technology, digital platforms, digital IDs, data enhanced statistical reporting and disruptive new business models.

Professor David Hand, Imperial College London, formerly President of the Royal Statistical Society, and Chief Scientific Officer, Winton Capital Management.
